I thought the KPJ performance was done and dusted. But something about it kept bothering me…
It wasn’t until I was preparing for the March 29 performance that I uncovered what was missing—and it sent me down a rabbit hole of just intonation, technique adjustments, and a surprising violin video that finally made it click.
My title may imply that piano was the “problem.” In fact, I’m simply highlighting the contrast. Piano has a fixed temperament, while strings require a more fluid, independent ear.
I’m sharing this not to dismiss what we’ve already built as singers, but to remind us not to throw away our natural instincts. Sometimes, when we try too hard to be “in tune,” we become overly cautious—and in that, we lose our natural confidence and ease in listening.
I recognized myself doing that at one point: over-correcting and losing it. Thankfully, I caught it—and found my way back.
