The Barossa Wine Train is preparing to leave the National Railway Museum, Port Adelaide, South Australia. The Video shows the interior of the Bluebirds. It also shows The Museum's Shunt in preparation for the new Port Dock Station. 18/10/22
nb THE MUSEUM WILL BE DOING DRIVERS EXPERIENCES IN THE FUTURE.
The Barossa Wine Train is to be moved from
The National Railway Museum, Port Adelaide,
South Australia where it has been stored for 15
years.
It was a beneficial arrangement for both parties-
storage for the owner-John Geber of Chateau
Tanunda who has lobbied for access to the
Barossa line for more than a decade to run a
train for tourists and it gave storage fees to the NRM.
The Barossa Wine Train is a three car ex. SAR
Bluebird railcar set which ran from Adelaide
Railway Station to Tanunda in the Barossa Valley.
from 1998-2003
The train consists of 2 x 250 class power cars
(251 and 252) as well as non-powered trailer.
Stored in a few positions around the Museum but
more recently by Jacketts Station.
The State Government of South Australia has a
51million dollar plan for this very station and
the NRM are having to yet again move exhibits
and dismantle Jacketts Station after a previous
plan was stopped by the Liberal Government in 2019.
That plan was more modest at $16 million+.
An already full area of railway treasures
from our past has to be jigsawed into a much
smaller space at the Museum.
The Barossa Train was sold to
OneRail (now Aurizon) with John Geber
coming up with a
plan to remove the interiors and put them
in to 3000 class Railcars
for his tourist railway.
There seems to be a lack of viable rail
corridor to Chateau Tanunda so it must be
a long term plan.
The Museum's Bluebird 257 will still be at the
Museum and The NRM, it's members and rail
enthusiasts alike sincerely hope The State
Government of South Australia will help the
Museum to be able to run the Bluebird, the
RedHens and ofcourse Peronne after it's
overhaul as soon as possible
The Museum is required to clear the area around
the Jacketts Station where the Government's Port
Dock railway line and station linking Port
Adelaide to the CBD is due to be started early 2023.
On 18th October 2022 NRM began shunting
exhibits and this will also facilitate the removal of
The Baroosa Wine Train by truck very shortly.
The Museum and their volunteers
work tirelessly to preserve our Rail
History for all and
I do hope The State Government
recognises their efforts and compensate
them with a
genuine working plan.
