How to grow Cyclamen Coum and Cyclamen hederifolium Outdoors
Hardy Cyclamen plants include varieties such as Cyclamen Coum which flowers in autumn as well as C.hederifolium which flowers in spring. These are perennial plants that you can grow outside.
These are the cyclamen plants that we can naturalise into the garden. They can also be grown in containers. Which species you can grow outdoors will depend on your climate zone.
Around 20 - 23 species are identified. and they range from the hardy types, which will grow outdoors in colder climates to half hardy types that require warmer positions and protection from cold and then the tender types which need warmer Mediterranean type climates to survive outdoors.
Hardy types include the well known C.coum and also C.hederifolium as well as C.cilicium, and C. libanoticum.
Half hardy types require a little more warmth and protection and these include Cyclamen africanum, C. balearicum, C. mirabile and C. pseudibericum.
The tender types require a Mediteranean type climate and include the well known C.persicum (florists cyclamen) as well as Cyclamen creticum, C. cyprium, C. graecum, C. maritimum, C. persicum, C. rohlfsianum and C. somalense.

1. Situation - part sun to dappled shade
2. Planting depth - around 1/2 inch deep (2-3 centimetres)
3. Drainage is a major factor, good drainage is essential.
4. Organic matter in the soil is also important.
5. Plant individual corms at around 4 inches (10cm) apart.
