Join me on a drive through the busy streets of Georgetown, Guyana’s capital city, heading west toward one of the country’s most important pieces of infrastructure — the Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB).
About Georgetown
Founded in the late 18th century, Georgetown is known as the “Garden City of the Caribbean” for its wide canals, tropical trees, and historic colonial wooden architecture. It is also Guyana’s commercial and cultural hub, home to landmarks like Stabroek Market, St. George’s Cathedral, and bustling streets filled with shops, buses, and vendors. Driving out of Georgetown gives a real sense of the city’s lively pace.
About the Demerara Harbour Bridge
Opened in 1978, the Demerara Harbour Bridge is one of the longest floating bridges in the world, stretching 1.8 kilometers (1.13 miles) across the Demerara River. It connects Georgetown (East Bank Demerara) to West Bank Demerara, making it a vital link for commerce, travel, and daily commutes. Despite its age, heavy traffic, and frequent retractions for ships, it continues to carry thousands of vehicles every day.
