In this episode, I talk with Megan Boynton, a long time colleague of mine, about the job of Technical Designer. We both worked as Technical Designers for Gap Inc. many moons ago. It's a long, but very meaty interview and I hope you will enjoy learning more about this influential fashion industry job, which is all about the "Fit" of the garment.
A Technical Designer's job is sit between the Designer, the Merchandiser and the Production Manager to make a garment fit customers that the merchandiser is selling too, adhere with the designer's original vision, while being made at the right price. All this is usually done remotely by sending communication overseas to agents and factories.
Technical design requires deep knowledge of pattern making principles as well as garment fitting techniques in addition to being a liaison between many arms of the business. In the video, Megan speaks with us about 4 different aspects of selling a garment - The Color, Shape, Price and Fit and how Fit is the number 1 reason someone will decide against buying an item. That's quite a responsibility, right? And yes it is.
Please let us know if you have any questions in the comments. Would love to hear from you.
