Running custom software on a Raspberry Pi 5, powered by the OpenAI (ChatGPT) Realtime API.
I gutted the original electronics, kept the motors, and 3D printed a new backplate to fit a microphone and speaker inside.
Billy works like a voice assistant — he listens, talks back, and moves his mouth and head depending on what’s happening.
There’s also some smart home integration: Billy sends MQTT state updates (listening, speaking, idle).
In my case a Home Assistant automation controls the Philips Hue lights in the bathroom based on what he does.
