For their capstone project, Computer Science major Evans Kumi '25 and Tendai Machaya '25 designed a portable, low-cost diagnostic device that leverages deep neural networks to detect COPD by analyzing volatile organic compounds in exhaled breath. They also worked on a complementary telemedicine platform that provides patients access to a personal AI-powered health assistant. The platform helps identify areas with a high prevalence of COPD cases and communicate findings to governmental health and environmental agencies, enabling data-driven interventions. Together, they aimed to enhance early detection, patient support, and policy response in under-resourced healthcare settings. #Ashesi2025
