A heart attack, also known as a myocardial infarction (MI), occurs when the blood flow to a part of the heart muscle is blocked for a long enough time that part of the heart muscle is damaged or dies. This blockage is usually caused by a buildup of plaque (made up of fat, cholesterol, and other substances) in the coronary arteries, which supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle.
The symptoms of a heart attack can vary but often include:
Chest pain or discomfort, which may feel like pressure, tightness, squeezing, or fullness in the chest. This pain can sometimes spread to the arms, neck, jaw, back, or stomach.
Shortness of breath.
Nausea, indigestion, or vomiting.
Sweating.
Feeling lightheaded or dizzy.
Anxiety or a feeling of impending doom.
It's important to note that not everyone experiences all of these symptoms, and some people may have atypical symptoms or no symptoms at all, especially women and older adults.
If you or someone else is experiencing symptoms of a heart attack, it's crucial to seek emergency medical attention immediately. Time is of the essence in treating a heart attack, as prompt treatment can help minimize damage to the heart muscle and improve outcomes. Treatment may include medications to help dissolve the blood clot causing the blockage, procedures to open blocked arteries (such as angioplasty and stenting), and lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of future heart problems.
