Here's a sound comparison of my 3 Marshalls, each set up how I like them. It's surprising to me how similar they can be made to sound.
Amp #1: 1969 Super Bass 100W, modded to a 1968 Super Lead signal path. Everything on 10, except bass at 0.
Amp #2: 1974 50W non-master volume, modded by Lee Jackson in 1986. This amp formerly belonged to Paul Gilbert and was used to record the first 2 Racer X albums.
Amp #3: 1978 50W master volume with a Soldano Hot Mod tube installed in the second position. This amp has tons of available gain.
All amps are running into an Ultimate Attenuator and a 1x12 cab with a Celestion Vintage 30. Each is receiving a slight mid boost and low cut from a (noisy) Boss GE-7 equalizer. No other pedals or effects.
