This is the destruction left behind after a 7.6 earthquake hit Japan’s Noto Peninsula on January 1, 2024.
It wasn’t the feared “Japan megaquake”, but it still destroyed entire towns and damaged over 200,000 buildings.
1.5 years later, I return to the disaster zone and its far from fixed. Still lots of roadworks and closed roads, collapsed homes, and entire communities still abandoned.
Even reinforced concrete buildings failed. This disaster shows what happens when the land itself shifts and what it means for property and real estate in Japan.
