The Story Of Why 2Baba And Blackface Are Still Clashing Over ‘AFRICAN QUEEN’ Song

For 20 years now, Nigerians have wondered whether legendary Nigerian singer 2baba stole his biggest hit song, African Queen. This question was spurred by Blackface’s relentless accusations and tantrums that he wrote the song, one of the greatest Afrobeats singles of all time, yet was not given credit or royalties. Initially, it was hard to believe, but as the accusations dragged on for years, it gradually erased doubts from the minds of many.
It’s no secret that before 2baba emerged as a solo artist in 2004, he was a member of the Nigerian hip-hop music group known as the Plantashun Boiz. Alongside Faze and Blackface, the trio rocked the Nigerian music scene from 1990, giving us back-to-back hit songs until they parted ways. As you all know, 2face went on to enjoy the most successful career. Still, it was marred by the constant allegations that the song which brought him to stardom was the creative work of his former bandmate. Even after settling in court, the struggling Reggae Dancehall act continued to blame 2face Idibia for his woes.
Exactly a decade later, Record Label Executive Kenny Ogungbe tried to put the matter to rest. In December of 2024, during an interview on The Honest Bunch Podcast, the CEO of Kennis Music dismissed Blackface’s claims that he was robbed. If anything, the legendary Baba Keke says Blackface’s reluctance to move on proves what Idris Abudlkareem once told him that 2baba is the Plantation and the rest are the boys.
