CDS Anil Chauhan Says Netaji’s Assertive Diplomacy Fits India’s Role In Today’s Unstable World Order

On Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan delivered a sharp message from Jawaharlal Nehru University: India’s strategic instincts must draw from Netaji’s legacy. Calling today’s world polycentric, unstable and uncertain, Chauhan said Bose’s blend of political vision, assertive diplomacy and military realism remains deeply relevant. He highlighted how Netaji built a government-in-exile, raised the Indian National Army, forged alliances and planned campaigns, showing how diplomacy and force operate together. Chauhan said INA’s sacrifices and attrition levels were among the highest in military history, yet remain under-recognised. He stressed that national security today extends beyond borders to protecting people and ideology, and that Netaji’s emphasis on unity across caste, region, religion and gender offers lessons for modern India navigating a fragmented global order.
