This beach is located nearly in the middle of the East Coast, around 30 miles south of Aberdeen, just under cliffs on which the village of St Cyrus is perched. It stretches for nearly two miles from the River North Esk in the south to the wall of cliffs on the north. The colour of the sand is slightly yellow, like most beaches on this coast. What is interesting about St Cyrus is that it doesn't have a line of dunes for almost half of its length, and the dunes which are there are not very impressive. Instead, on the northern half of the beach, the high face of the eroded cliff is rising over the sand. It is overgrown with bushes, grass and wild plants which are blooming beautifully in late spring and early summer. There is a path down the cliff face from the tiny car park at the top of the cliffs. It offers amazing views of the beach below. Dunes on the southern part of the beach are slightly bigger, and behind them, sheltered from the sea winds, is located the St Cyrus Nature Reserve, which is a stretch of natural grassland and wetland, one of the richest habitats in the UK. Thanks to the abundance of wild flowers, it is visited by a huge number of butterflies and moths, as well as birds that feed on them. Thanks to the well-organised Visitor Centre of the Nature Reserve, the beach is quite popular, especially its southern part. We prefer the quieter north part, because of the amazing rock formations located there and a shallow cave in this cliff face, which ends the beach. During the low tide, it is possible to go around those cliffs and reach a charming waterfall and going even further, the ruins of Cannibal Laird's Castle perched dangerously on the narrow sea stack, a place of rather gruesome history. Be careful there, as the algae-covered rocks are slippery. There are two car parks at this beach, one I already mentioned, at the very edge of the cliffs, around 200 meters from St Cyrus church. It is tiny, just for a few cars, but it has a brand new overflow car park just near the church. The second car park is next to the Visitor Centre of the St Cyrus Nature Reserve, and it is much bigger. It also has access to toilets, a cosy snack bar and a small exhibition related to the area. It is also a starting place for a few coastal walks. All in all, St Cyrus Beach is an amazing place for a one-day trip, especially if you are a fan of nature walks and geology. We recommend dividing your visit evenly between both parts of the beach.
