The saying that “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” does not apply to the Blue River in Kansas City, Missouri. Preservationists hardly appreciate the tires, shoes, furniture, and other junk they fish out in the wake of illegal dumpers. But manmade pollution is not the only threat to the Blue River. Invasive plants like honeysuckle, which originated as landscaping, disrupt the ecosystem. Local environmentalists are now tackling both scourges through a monumental $5 million grant the Missouri Department of Natural Resources awarded with leftover federal COVID-19 relief funds.
The cleanup divides the river into a north zone, plagued mostly by illegal dumping, and the south zone, where invasive species are the main problem. Restoring the land around the river helps with flood control, reduces erosion, and improves water quality for everyone, since the Blue River flows into the Missouri River, which supplies the city’s drinking water.
