May 18, 2024 -- After leaving Detroit, we traveled along the Canadian-side of Lake Erie. Our first major stop with at Point Pelee National Park, the most southern point of mainland Canada, where we were rewarded with a great walk and hundreds of songbirds. As we drove along the Talbot Trail, we were surprised by how much the coast was farmland and remained undeveloped. We made stops in Port Glasgow, at the St. Thomas Elevated Park, in Dunnville to see the giant "Muddy" and an overnight stay in Port Maitland. We finished this part of the trip by visiting two of the locks of the Welland Canal, the first being Lock 8 in Port Colborne. The last stop was at Lock 3 and the Welland Canals Centre in St. Catherines and we were fortunate to see a ship pass through the lock.
