This video originated from wondering if the Make Noise 0-CTRL could be used to make a different sort of generative "Krell" patch, a classic of modular synthesis, on the Make Noise 0-Coast. I ended up using a single step on the 0-CTRL (gating the 0-Coast Contour module), continually resetting, to function as a sort of LFO envelope that serves as the main Krell envelope. This frees up the Slope module to further modulate the sound. I show a lot of different variations to explore the possibilities. Also, for reference, I've included a brief clip of the standard Krell patch (same patch, different tuning re: the Krell patch in the 0-Coast manual) at the beginning of the video (and then I just tacked on some more of that at the end). Of it all, I really like the "inverted" Krell that the 0-CTRL brings (long high notes and short thumpy bass notes), especially without even including the Slope. I'm going to rethink how the Slope might be put to better use in this case (vs. the normalled connection to the Overtone module). The Korg NTS-1 is providing both reverb and delay to the original Krell, and the Nux Atlantic is providing reverb to the 0-CTRL Krell. The two patches being used are as follows:
ORIGINAL KRELL PATCH (0-Coast)
Stepped Random Voltage to Utility Input Right
Utility Output Left to Slope TIME
Utility Output Right to 1V/Oct
Slope EOC to TEMPO
Slope to Dynamic
Utility (4:00)
Pitch (9:00)
Overtone (10:00)
Multiply (10:00)
Mulitply Att (9:30)
Rise (min)
Fall (max)
Slope Shape (on line)
Balance (12:00)
Dynamic (3:00)
MODIFIED KRELL PATCH (0-Coast + 0-CTRL)
step gate output 2 to Reset (0-CTRL)
Utility Output Left (0-Coast) to Time CV Input (0-CTRL)
Clock Output (0-CTRL) to TEMPO (0-Coast)
Dynamic Gate Output (0-CTRL) to GATE (0-Coast)
Stepped Random Voltage (0-Coast) to Utility Input Right (0-Coast)
Utility Output Right (0-Coast, stackable cable) to TIME (0-Coast)
Utility Output Right (0-Coast) to 1V/Oct
This patch relies on the normalled 0-Coast wiring of contour to dynamic and slope to the multiplier cv input.
On 0-CTRL the Speed is at about 12:30, Strength is maxed, Step 2 Strength is at about 10:00, and the Time CV control is at maximum.
On the 0-Coast
Utility (3:00)
Pitch (9:00)
Overtone (8:00)
Mult (max)
Mult Att (min)
Rise (2:30)
Fall (4:00)
Slope Shape (on line)
Onset (min)
Sus (max)
Decay (12:00)
Contour Shape (2:00)
Balance (vary)
Dynamic (9:00-max)
Volume (I tried...)
