TOPIC: The Purpose of Wisdom

Proverbs 1:1-6 (KJV)

1) The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;

2) To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding.

3) To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;

4) To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

5) A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

6) To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

MESSAGE
The book of Proverbs opens with a clear declaration of its purpose: to impart wisdom, discipline, and understanding. These verses lay the foundation for what godly wisdom truly is, not just intelligence or cleverness, but moral insight, spiritual discernment, and practical life guidance rooted in reverence for God.

Solomon, the writer, was a man blessed with extraordinary wisdom (1 Kings 4:29-34), and he used it to guide a nation. But here, he shares that this same wisdom is available to all, the simple, the young, and even the wise who want to grow wiser (verse 5). In a world filled with noise and confusion, God’s Word remains the ultimate source of clarity and direction. Wisdom in Proverbs is not passive; it is instructional meant to shape our actions, choices, and attitudes. It leads us to live justly, make fair decisions, and walk in integrity. This echoes what Paul said in 2 Timothy 3:16, where all Scripture is given for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.

To walk in wisdom is to walk in alignment with God’s will. It requires humility, a teachable spirit, and a heart willing to grow. Jesus, even as a child, grew in wisdom and favour with God and man (Luke 2:52), showing us that wisdom is not automatic it must be pursued, valued, and applied.

CENTRAL TRUTH
Wisdom is the foundation for godly living, and it is freely given to those who seek it with a humble heart.

PRAYER
Lord, thank You for the gift of wisdom found in Your Word. Help me to receive instruction with a willing heart and to apply it in every area of my life. Teach me to walk in justice, discernment, and truth. May I grow daily in wisdom and bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, amen.
