Séan O'Donnell studied medicine in Queen's University Belfast after a gap year in a Welsh GP surgery and volunteering in Malawi. He did Foundation 1, 2 and a Clinical Fellow year in Northern Ireland rotating through medical, paediatric and several surgical jobs. He is now a core surgical trainee in the Liverpool children's hospital, has recently passed his MRCS (to become a Mr) and will be applying to Paediatric Surgery Registrar jobs very soon. Most importantly Séan supports Wales for the football but Ireland for the rugby.
If you like surgery, love fun patient interaction and can tolerate crying children then paediatric surgery is the one for you! Even if you don't want to make a career in this field it's fun, educational and you see things that don't even exist in other specialties. From an appendicectomy in a 100kg teenager, to a cancer resection in a toddler to repairing an oesophageal atresia in a premature baby the job is very varied and super specialised.
