Around 2 million Indians are affected by strokes every year and this boils down to 20 percent of global stroke burden. Those are huge numbers. Brain stroke and heart attacks combined are leading causes of death, a new pandemic. But a new trend is coming out from Asia and especially India where we see a lot of youngsters coming to our emergency rooms with strokes. This is a worrying trend.

Stroke in young is defined as a stroke happening under the age of 49. This subset of patients have some unique subset of risk factors due to which they get this stroke. In India, The  average age of patients is 15 years younger compared to that in developed countries and one-fifth of patients with first ever strokes admitted to hospitals are aged less than 40 years.

What is a brain stroke? 
Stroke is a brain disease caused by sudden interruption of the blood supply to the brain. There are two types of strokes. One is due to blockage of a brain artery by a blood clot or fat mass. This is seen in 85% of all strokes and is called an ischemic stroke. In the other 15% cases, a brain artery ruptures which causes brain hemorrhage and we call it a hemorrhagic stroke.

F: for Face drooping.
A: for Arm weakness.
S: for Speech difficulty.
T: for the Time
