Both the Mavs (39-20) and the Lakers (41-18) entered this Sunday afternoon showdown looking to make a move in the standings. Kobe and the Lakers were coming off a tough road loss in Portland where their 10 game winning streak came to an end. Kobe ended the first half with 14 points but uncharacteristically left 7 points at the free throw line (3-10). He added 8 more points in the 3rd, but the Lakers were outscored 21-15 and Dallas took a three point lead to the 4th. Kobe went nuclear in the final quarter, exploding for 22 points with a perfect 13-13 from the line. After a Dirk Nowitzki three sent the game into overtime, Kobe added in another 8 points and the Lakers pulled away for good. KB ended the afternoon with his 22nd career 50+ point game, scoring 52 points on 15-27 shooting and grabbing 11 rebounds. After missing 7 of his first 10 at the free throw line, he made his next 17 to record a career-high 27 free throw attempts, making 20.
