Double Paradiddles Made Fun – Grooves, Fills & Beyond!

In this week’s Drums By Liz lesson, I break down how to use the double paradiddle as both a groove and a fill.

We start by learning the sticking: RLRLRR LRLRLL, with accents on the first note of each six-note grouping. From there, I show how to play it as a groove, add some bass drum variations to build excitement, and then take a closer look at orchestrating fill-ins. You’ll see different ways to move the left hand to the toms while the right hand rides the cymbal—always at a pace where you can follow along and start building your own ideas.

Toward the end, I share one of my favorite applications: playing the pattern between ride, snare, and bass drum. Tag every right hand with the bass note, then shift the last note of the 12-note cycle to the right hand. It’s a pattern I use often, and it works beautifully as a polyrhythm too—I’ll demo that for you in the video.

This is where the double paradiddle becomes more than just a sticking—it’s a tool for taking your playing to another level. It pushes your coordination, expands your creativity, and develops the mindset pros use: applying chops and rudiments in ways that elevate not just your technique, but the way you think about drumming.
