Are 'Photography Genres' Holding Us Back?

Are photography genres holding us back? Does the pressure to conform to and stick to one photography genre (Landscape, Street, Portrait) either professionally or as a photographer sharing work online, kill our creativity and diminish the enjoyment of photography? Why can't we just be 'photographers'? Why is niching down considered a route to success?
This is something i've been thinking about recently. I'm passionate about Landsacpe Photography (as many of you know) but in my professional work, I photography all kinds of different subjects and I just consider myself 'a photographer'. I don't feel like adding a label before the word 'photographer' works for me because I would hate to be pigeon-holed into one genre or style.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this in the comments!
