This is number eighteen, and the last in this series of intermediate character pieces.
There is a sense of foreboding as this prelude begins...an air of suspicion.
While there is little actual proof of some wrongdoing taking place, the circumstantial evidence continues to mount. We become more certain with each passing measure that there is evil afoot. The "trembling" chords in the left hand and the low rumbling of the octaves in the bass lend more credence to our feelings that something is very, very wrong. The melody pleads with us to tread cautiously as it rises and falls.
Suddenly there is a shift from minor to major and all our prior convictions and concerns are seen with a new clarity. The melodic phrases are now only two measures long, where they were four measures before, indicating a growing excitement for the truth that has now been revealed. Where darkness was all that could be seen before, we now see the light of forgiveness and the piece ends as we race headlong into the arms of our waiting beloved.
