If you are trying to loosen the crank bolt or your cam bolts, it is possible to gradually turn the crank/cams counter-clockwise. If this happens for most portions of the engine cycle, you could damage pistons/valves/etc. I always put my crank to 0 and cams to TDC (dashes) and travel no further than BTDC (dots). Hand cranking or a weak impact tool is especially prone to move things. I love the craftsman CMCF940 for popping these nearly instantly.
RECAP: you can set the crank to TDC and attempt to reverse the bolt with a monster impact tool UNTIL BDTC
TDC is when the crank is at 0 and the two cams DASHes are at 12-oclock mark
BTDC is when the crank is at 60 and the two cams DOTS are at 12-oclock mark
btdc is 60/30/30 BACK/CCW from TDC. the ONLY time you can turn your cam/crank CCW is from TDC to BTDC.
This is good to know if you are removing stuck cam bolts. If you want to remove a crank bolt, maybe the starter method isn't the worst thing (might be hard on the flywheel/starter?)
