It's a beautiful summer afternoon in Gibson County, Indiana, and we're set up along County Road 300 South just south of Princeton. CSX 7285 leads CSX 1877 and CSX 3267 while hauling a 101-car mixed freight train southbound, giving us a nice surprise in the form of one of CSX's growing roster of heritage units.
CSX 1877 pays tribute to the Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad, which was founded in 1877 when three smaller railroads consolidated into a single entity as C&EI. One of those predecessor railroads was the Evansville and Terre Haute Railroad, which actually built this particular rail line way back in the early 1850s, making this essentially a "homecoming" for the C&EI heritage unit.
The C&EI, which also connected Chicago to St. Louis, remained independent until 1967, when it was absorbed by the Missouri Pacific Railroad and the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. Through a series of subsequent mergers, the L&N later became part of CSX, making the C&EI a viable option for CSX to honor with this special historic livery.
Recorded on August 23, 2025.
