Africans jumping off of slave ships into the ocean during transport on the Middle Passage may have had greater political resonance than we realize. Viewing these acts as simply suicide to escape slavery ignores a "politics of refusal," which then becomes fuel for Black anarchism and new radical ways to imagine a better society against an anti-Black world. Dr. Sam C. Tenorio, Assistant Professor of African American Studies and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at The Pennsylvania State University, joins host Dr. Mark Anthony Neal to examine instances of resistance against the state into the 21st century in the new book, "Jump: Black Anarchism and Antiblack Carcerality," published by ‪@NYUPressOnline‬.
