In English grammar, Mood refers to the form of a verb that shows the speaker’s attitude or intention towards what they are saying. It helps convey whether a sentence is stating a fact, giving a command, expressing a wish, or asking a question. Mood reflects not just the action but the purpose behind that action.
There are generally four primary moods in English: Indicative, Imperative, Subjunctive, and Interrogative. The Indicative Mood is used for factual statements or questions. The Imperative Mood is used to issue commands, advice, or requests. The Subjunctive Mood expresses hypothetical, imaginary, or desired situations. The Interrogative Mood forms questions. Understanding moods is essential for mastering sentence structure and achieving accuracy in both spoken and written English. It is especially important for exams, formal writing, and professional communication, as different moods influence verb usage and meaning. Proper use of mood improves fluency and clarity in expression.
