Purnam Shanti Mantra | Om Purnamadah Purnamidam | 108 Chants
This ancient Vedic mantra comes from the Isha Upanishad, one of the oldest spiritual texts of India.
Its message is simple: everything is whole.
Nothing is missing.
Nothing can truly be taken away.
From wholeness, the world appears, and wholeness remains.
Many traditions chant this mantra for peace, healing, and inner stillness.
It reminds us that peace is not something we search for outside.
It is already here, in the Self.
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः
Literal Meaning of Mantra:
Om pūrṇamadaḥ pūrṇam idam
“Om. That (the ultimate, Brahman) is full; This (the manifest world) is also full.”
The ultimate reality (the unmanifest, formless Brahman) is complete and infinite.
The manifested world, though seemingly separate, is also complete because it arises from fullness.
Pūrṇāt pūrṇam udacyate
“From fullness, fullness emerges.”
Everything comes out of the infinite without diminishing it.
Creation does not take away from the source; the source remains complete.
Pūrṇasya pūrṇam ādāya
“Taking fullness from fullness…”
Even if the infinite gives rise to the universe, or if you take any part of it, the fullness remains.
Pūrṇam evāvaśiṣyate
“…fullness alone remains.”
The totality is never reduced. The source and the whole are eternal and unbroken.
Om śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ
“Om. Peace, Peace, Peace.”
A concluding invocation of peace in three realms: physical, mental, and spiritual, or in past, present, and future.
This mantra teaches non-duality and absolute completeness:
The ultimate reality (Brahman) is infinite, formless, and self-contained.
Everything in the universe arises from this fullness, yet the source remains untouched.
Apparent separation, limitation, or duality in the world does not diminish the ultimate completeness.
The mantra is a reminder that we, too, are part of this fullness; we are never truly lacking.
The final śānti invocation anchors the realization in inner, outer, and universal peace.
