Here is an animation of a finite element analysis simulation which has been rendered with 3D ray tracing using Paraview. This is a finite element analysis simulation of an 8 kg drop on to an empty soda can. The total length of the animation is 100 ms. This simulation was performed using the solver LS-Dyna. The render engine in Paraview for this animation was OSPRey ray caster (Sciviz). Paraview is free to download and is one of the best ways that I've found to get photorealistic images and videos from LS-Dyna d3plot output files. Paraview rendering should be feasible with other FEA solver animation outputs from programs like Abaqus and Ansys.

I also provide a comparison of animations that you would normally get through LS-PrePost with and without smooth shading. LS-PrePost is limited in the output resolution for videos so Paraview is a much better alternative.
Finite element analysis uses the finite element method (FEM) to simulate physical, real-world events, to get a desired response. These models can then be used to estimate the response of an object through limitless forms of situations.
*Note: Paraview ray tracing may require your computer to have at least 16 gb of ram for animation rendering. Screenshots should be fine for most computers. Of course, the size of your simulation can dramatically change this.
