Exposition « Les Vivants » | Jaider Esbell

Jaider Esbell est un artiste et écrivain issu du peuple Makuxi du nord de l’Amazonie brésilienne. Il se qualifiait lui-même comme artiviste : un artiste activiste particulièrement actif dans la défense des droits territoriaux et culturels des Indiens du Brésil. Jaider Esbell était également commissaire d’exposition indépendant — curateur piya’san (chaman) selon ses propres termes —, promoteur inlassable de l’Arte Indígena Contemporânea (AIC) dans son pays. Jaider Esbell nous a quittés en novembre 2021, au sommet de son art profondément onirique, inspiré à la fois par le bestiaire de la mythologie Makuxi, le tracé des pétroglyphes des savanes du Roraima et ses propres songes cosmologiques. Sa trajectoire fulgurante et son oeuvre resteront gravées dans la mémoire de la lutte des peuples amérindiens et dans celle de l’art contemporain universel.

Jaider Esbell is an artist and writer from the Makuxi people of the northern Brazilian Amazon. He described himself as an artivist: an activist artist, particularly active in defending the territorial and cultural rights of Brazilian Indians. Jaider Esbell was also an independent curator–a piya’san (shaman) curator in his own words–, a tireless promoter of Arte Indígena Contemporânea (AIC) in his country. Jaider Esbell left this world in November 2021, at the peak of his deeply dreamlike art, inspired at the same time by the bestiary of Makuxi mythology, the petroglyphs of the Roraima savannahs, and his own cosmological dreams. His dazzling trajectory and his work will remain engraved in the memory of the struggle of the Amerindian peoples and in that of universal contemporary art.
