Jim Lommasson is an award-winning Portland-based photographer and author, known for his powerful storytelling through photography. He received the Dorothea Lange–Paul Taylor Prize from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University for his book Shadow Boxers: Sweat, Sacrifice and the Will to Survive in American Boxing Gyms. After a successful career in commercial photography, Lommasson shifted his focus to projects that explore personal narratives through the cherished items people carry. His notable works include Exit Wounds: Soldiers’ Stories – Life After Iraq and Afghanistan and What We Carried: Fragments from the Cradle of Civilization, which document the experiences of war veterans and refugees.
His latest project, What I Carry, highlights personal objects that tell the stories of people on the street facing addiction, recovery, mental health challenges, and homelessness. Through this work, Lommasson continues his mission to illuminate the resilience and humanity behind each object – and the person carrying it.
