Well he doesn't put it quite like that but this is a very interesting review of his favourite short stories in many different genres. Of course, he discusses Poe, Bierce, Maupassant, Hawthorne, Kipling, Stevenson, Harte and many more. Rarities like Bulwer Lytton and Grant Allen are very interesting. I really must read them!

But the most interesting book he discusses is his top choice for historical novel. Not Scott's Ivanhoe, but Charles Reade's The Cloister and the Hearth. Well, dear reader, I bought a copy! I am looking forward to reading it. Caveat: when I get round to it.
