Rwanda is a country in East Africa with a population of about 13 million people. It is also known as the land of a thousand hills because of its hilly and mountainous terrain. However, this landscape poses a challenge for agriculture, as soil erosion and land degradation threaten the productivity and sustainability of farming. According to the Rwanda Water and Forestry Authority (RWB), about 1.08 million hectares of land in Rwanda are at risk of erosion. To address this problem, the government of Rwanda through Ministry of Agriculture (MINAGRI) and International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) have implemented various soil conservation measures under Kayonza Irrigation and Integrated Watershed Management Project (KIIWP) implemented by the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB), such as radical terraces, progressive terraces, contour bunds, and agroforestry. Terraces are levelled sections of a cultivated slope, designed to slow or prevent the rapid surface runoff of rainwater. They also help to store water in the soil profile, replenish the groundwater, and keep nutrients and soil particles from washing away from the field.
