I hope to never get that backed up in responding to comments ever again. It took me 7 hours to get caught up yesterday. It really means a lot that people take the time to leave comments and I feel strongly about acknowledging them with, at the very least, a simple “Thank you.” No cutting and pasting either. I have this weird thing about typing each response out. That is why they will always alternate between - Thanks, Thank you, Thanks a lot, Thank you kindly…
This would have been my pick for Valentine’s Day - “The Origin of Love” from the soundtrack of the film, “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” which was based on the off-broadway play (of the same name) and which returned to Broadway in 2014. I first got interested in Hedwig when I saw a fellow on YouTube do a guitar/vocal cover of “Wicked Little Town” and, while I’d never heard the song before, I really liked it. I watched some clips on YouTube and eventually bought the movie which I enjoyed. When the show came back to Broadway, Lynn bought me tickets as a birthday gift. It was our first Broadway play/musical we’d seen together as well as our first time taking the train into Manhattan. It was really a magical night. It was snowing when we got on the train and there was a few inches on the ground by the time we got to the city. It was such a relief knowing that we didn’t have to worry about driving home after the show. We had first row loge seats which, in my opinion, are the best seats in any house. Michael C. Hall (Dexter) was playing the role of Hedwig. I had no idea he could sing like that. Lena Hall costarred and nearly stole the show a few times. We enjoyed the show so much that we decided to go back and see it again when John Cameron Mitchell (who originated the role and directed and starred in the movie) was to play the part of Hedwig. I should add that Stephen Trask wrote the music and lyrics. Unfortunately, when we arrived at the theatre, we learned that he (JCM) had injured himself during a performance and the role would be played by an understudy. Fortunately, the understudy was Michael C. Hall again and we enjoyed the show nonetheless. This play was actually the origin of our love for Broadway musicals. We’ve seen quite a number of them over the last couple of years and the more plays I see, the more I think I prefer them to concerts. The performances and productions (sound/lights/sets) are always near perfect and the audiences are much more well behaved.
I thought it was really interesting that this song was based on a creation myth that was delivered by Aristophanes as part of Plato’s Symposium. Not that philosophy is my strong suit, but look it up if you have any interest in that sort of thing. Here’s a Wikipedia link - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symposi...
If that doesn’t interest you, here’s a link to the video from the movie that’s got lots of cool animations explaining the myth (much more my speed) - • Hedwig and the Angry Inch - The Origin of ...
Lynn and I started off a week’s vacation last Saturday by going to see “Phantom of the Opera”. I have to say, while it was very good, it was probably my least favorite show of the ones we’ve seen. We’d seen on Facebook that our young friend, Ellie Kim, was playing another large role in “School of Rock - The Musical”. She was playing the part of Summer, the band manager, which is even more prominent a part than Katie - The Bass Player. When our show ended, we strolled by Ellie’s theatre and met with her and her folks and had a few laughs as her show was letting out. Such nice people.
We’re off to see Tedeschi Trucks Band tonight. Lynn’s dragging me to this one, but I’m sure it will be alright. Zzzzzzz.
