Easy Watercolor Background (using just 4 colors)

How to paint an easy watercolor background which will give a soft mottled effect, this is ideal behind wildlife subjects.

The right background is really important to showcase the bird, animal or botanical subject that is your main focus. With some subjects it has a vital role in enabling them to show against the white paper. For others it can really complement and enhance the colors. In this example I apply a very pale mottled wash which enhances the Asian Otter that I later painted.
