Comet Leonard Video: Comet Leonard moved into the evening sky for Northern hemisphere observers around December 12th, 2021. Prior to that it was low in the pre-dawn skies in November. This short clip is based on a plan to try and visually observe the comet, and hopefully capture images. The visual observation proved to be elusive at best even with high power binoculars. Using the popular free planetarium software Stellarium a sky map for the time, date and location complete with current location data for the comet can easily be created. Based on the mapping the best possible location from the Pal Dows observatory location was the main parking area. In the time compressed dash cam video, the main learning center and domes are just visible in the upper right corner of the view. The low altitude of the comet made imaging a challenge, but perseverance and a measure of good luck seemed to have done the trick in the end a faint little nucleus shows up when I switched from the 24-70 lens to a 200mm prime. Following the comet effort, I spent time with the 24” telescope imaging Jupiter for a time lapse video effort…stay tuned for more.
