The Niger Delta is a region rich in culture, diversity, and natural resources. But beneath its surface lies a different reality. In many parts of this region, thousands of people struggle to access basic needs, such as education, healthcare, and basic infrastructure. Join us on a journey through the Niger Delta as we shed light on the challenges faced by its people and the inspiring efforts being made to bring about change.
Over the years, Non-existent roads and transportation network has made commuting a daily struggle for the people of Ayoungbene. Ayoungbene is an Ijaw community on the creeks of the Niger Delta, Delta State, Warri North local Government area to be precise, and is one of the most underdeveloped communities in the Niger Delta.
This remote community naturally endowed with breathtaking landscapes struggles to meet the basic needs of its inhabitants. The villagers have no access to health care, nor do they have any form of formal education. Leaving most children uneducated and The Villagers without access to clean water. In a nutshell, the people of Ayoungbene are faced with a myriad of challenges on a daily basis. Today, A team of individuals led by the determined Ade Mabo is in Ayoungbene village.
They are the volunteers and staff of the Roli Mabo Foundation and they are here for a Medical and food distribution outreach. During their stay, they will conduct free Tuberculosis tests and free medical check-ups and they will also be distributing food items to the people of Ayoungbene and its neighboring community “Odibogbene.” Education is the key to unlocking a brighter future for children in communities like this. However, limited resources, dilapidating infrastructures, and a lack of trained teachers make it difficult to provide the education these children deserve. To this end, the foundation has put it upon itself to pay extra attention to education in Jakpa (an Itsekiri community) in the Warri North Local Government area, ever since the commencement of work in 2020.
The foundation has sponsored the renovation of Uwangue Primary School. The project also involved buying materials including books, shoes, and uniforms. Access to healthcare is a fundamental human right, yet many Niger-Deltans face significant healthcare challenges. But thanks to the intervention of the foundation hundreds of people have benefited from its free healthcare services. The foundation has also sponsored a number of surgeries and treatments for tuberculosis patients in the Creeks. The foundation also provided a library where children could read and borrow books. A lack of medical facilities, and limited resources make it difficult to provide health care in Ugbege Village, but with the help of the foundation.
The people of Ugbege and other neighboring communities will be screened for tuberculosis. We wrap up our adventure to the Niger Delta with a fun evening with the kids. Volunteers and staff of the foundation gave the children of Jakpa village a treat by organizing a party for the children. Our journey towards progress and prosperity in the Niger Delta is filled with challenges, but it is also brimming with resilience, innovation, and the collective determination to overcome obstacles. Together, we can empower The Niger Delta and create a world where education, health care, and basic infrastructures are accessible to all.
