The Tultugan Festival pays homage to the classic Filipino tale of creation, “Malakas at Maganda.”
The tale foretells of a Haribon, king of the birds that pecked and split a large bamboo in two. From the bamboo came out “Makusog” or Malakas and “Maanyag” or maganda. Makusog is a reflection of a man, strong, obedient and hardworking. He is the one in charge of heavy work and serves as the pillar of a household by building a bahay-kubo. Maanyag is a symbol of purity and innocence as seen in the fetching of water from the cascading waterfalls using rarog water vessels.
Maasin, iloilo is blessed with lush bamboo groves in the island and the story of creation mirrors the eden-like abode of Maasinanons. They are strong and beautiful people who patiently work with intricate bamboo crafts, flavorful delicacies, and world class exports of musical instruments. Like bamboos, they are built with the strong foundation of Ilonggo values—resilient always bends to the sway of life but never broken by challenges.
