El Hornocal is a stunning mountain range in Jujuy, Argentina, known as the "Mountain of 14 Colors" for its vibrant, multicolored slopes. Located 25 kilometers from Humahuaca, it features a limestone formation with distinct mineral layers that create a striking visual spectacle. Visitors can reach the mountains via a scenic, winding road and can experience panoramic views, with some trails offering opportunities for hiking closer to the formations.
Geological features
The mountain range is composed of a limestone formation called Yacoraite that extends from Peru through Bolivia and Argentina.
Tectonic activity and erosion over millions of years have exposed the mineral-rich layers, creating a spectacular display of colors.
The vibrant hues of red, orange, yellow, green, and purple are a result of different mineral compositions and change with the shifting sunlight.
