Mumbai’s local trains carry over 7.5 million people daily. In 2024, 2,468 people died on the tracks, with at least seven deaths each day, including from falling off moving trains. Each weekend, the Railway Passengers’ Safety Struggle Committee campaigns for 15-coach trains, more frequent services, staff recruitment and safety facilities. The annual ₹16,400 crore railway budget may outline long-term plans, but this campaign seeks immediate change. “This train has become a life-threatening space. People leave in the morning, but there’s no guarantee they’ll return,” Manisha, a member of the Progressive Women’s Organisation tells Article 14.
