ADVANTAGES OF A SIDEWAYS FIRE:
1) Airflow is optimal through all stages from the initial spark to the larger fuel burning well. Top-down fires are generally considered superior to bottom-up fires, but in both cases as the smaller fuel burns the ash tends to progressively clog up air passages through the wood or through the base of the stove. With the sideways burn, during the start-up, adjacent to the fire there is always a clear passage for air to flow, which doesn't get choked up by the ash and embers. In addition, the air flows more freely through the thicker wood, so that the convection currents are faster, which in turn draws the flames sideways into the progressively thicker fuel.
2) Improved success rate in starting fires and getting fire to take hold in the thicker fuel.
3) Low maintenance. With a little practice one can get a fire going with a spark and then sit back and watch it, without needing to stoke the fire. Once you have a full burn, then one will naturally resume normal refueling and maintenance of the fire. With portable stoves such as the SIEGE Stove, a compact poker is handy to have (and fun) for stoking the fire and opening up air holes, as desired.
SIEGE® SIDE-FIRE SYSTEM: A great way to stack twigs and tinder in a stove so that the fire burns SIDEWAYS into the fuel through progressively thicker twigs. Sorting and stacking the twigs according to grade, and creating a tinder air-flow chimney up the side of the fuel, provides improved air flow through the tinder and enhances the ability of the fire to spread from the tinder through the rest of the fuel.
With this technique you can increase your success rate in starting fires. With a little practice, you will be able to start a fire on the first try with a high success rate and no hands-on manipulating of the fuel required to get the flames to take hold in the rest of the wood fuel.
