On this day, Monday, February 26, 1968 Braniff International's Supersonic Transport Exhibit opened in Washington DC. The impressive display that highlighted Braniff's planned entrance into the Supersonic jetliner field was ceremoniously opened at the Civil Aeronautics Building in the nation's capitol.
The two-week long exhibit drew accolades from both government officials and the public who viewed the exhibit and the accompanying SST promotional film. The CAB had invited all airlines to create an exhibit that promoted air travel but the general consensus was that Braniff's was the best exhibit by far.
A sleek two-minute film was played continuously that highlighted what air travel might be like in the Supersonic era, which Braniff believed was just around the corner. The film was originally created as a television commercial that began airing a few months earlier in December 1967. Wells Rich Green, Braniff's advertising agency, produced the film under the direction of Jerry Kreeger. The futuristic film was produced in England, under Mr. Kreeger's supervision who served as Wells Rich Greene's television producer.
Braniff's depiction of Supersonic air travel included pods that could pick up passengers at a central location and then take them to the airport and then directly to the door of their plane. Other imaginations included a motorized laundry for dry cleaning passenger's garments and automated food and beverages as well as inflight phone service. Even the gate agent was able to move quickly about the exterior of the aircraft with the help of a personal jet pack apparatus. The movie enticed the viewer to realize that this automated travel was just around the corner and as close as 1975 which was the year that the clip was based upon.
