We travelled deep inside India’s textile city in Tamil Nadu — the state that powers one of the largest garment and textile ecosystems in Asia.

Tamil Nadu alone contributes nearly 1/3rd of India’s total textile output and is responsible for over 50% of India’s cotton yarn exports.

But behind this massive economic engine lies a workforce that keeps it running — and a huge part of that workforce comes from North India.

Across Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Erode and Salem, 40% to 60% of workers are migrants from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal, depending on the factory cluster. Some units even run with 70% North Indian labour, especially in the peak export season.
