The author of ‘Prophet Song’ talks to Olivia Röllin about empathy, meditation and the power of stories.

When Paul Lynch wrote his latest book, he thought that ‘Prophet Song’ could end his career. Because the novel, in which Ireland becomes a totalitarian state, hits readers with full force. From the very first sentence, Lynch traces with intimate clarity what happens to a family caught up in the maelstrom of state violence, arbitrariness and persecution. The fact that his story is set in a Western European country with an established democracy makes it even more disturbing.

In 2023, the Irish author received the coveted Booker Prize for his work. Since then, his world has been turned upside down and, according to his own statements, he almost only gives interviews. Lynch is a linguistic virtuoso who has to engage in inner contemplation in order to be able to write. He speaks of an attempt at radical empathy. Which is not always easy, as he is first and foremost the father of two children.

He talks to Olivia Röllin about existential tipping points, the revolution of empathy and writing as a form of existence.
