“Adagio for Strings” by American composer Samuel Barber is one of the most hauntingly beautiful and emotionally charged pieces in classical music. Originally composed in 1936 as the slow movement of his String Quartet, Op. 11, Barber later arranged it for string orchestra in 1938. The piece is built around a simple ascending motif that gradually swells into an intense emotional climax before gently receding into a quiet, unresolved ending. Revered for its deep sense of mourning and introspection, it has been performed at national memorials—including those for President John F. Kennedy and the victims of 9/11—and featured in the film Platoon. Its spiritual weight and lyrical purity have led many to consider it an unofficial American elegy. The music’s timeless emotional power also inspired adaptations such as Barber’s own choral version (Agnus Dei) and electronic remixes by artists like William Orbit and Tiësto, further cementing its status as a universal expression of grief and transcendence.
