Jerry Garcia & New Riders of the Purple Sage - rare backstage footage - playing "Rainmaker" - 1970

Enjoy this very rare moment where Jerry Garcia hangs out as the New Riders of the Purple Sage jams out playing "Rainmaker" - a song originally by Harry Nilsson - as the band gets ready to play at the 1970 Winterland Concert.

There was an intensity surrounding the evening because the day before, Janis Joplin's death had shocked the tight knit San Francisco rock world. Grateful Dead played first. The "Workingman's Dead" had become very popular over the summer so the crowd was wild with excitement.

In 1970, Dean and Dudley Evenson purchased a Sony Video Portapack. Video had previously been used only by big television stations, but now it became a tool for change in the hands of everyday people. And the times they were a changing! One of their first videos was made when they took their camera to the Alternate Media Conference at Goddard College in Vermont.

There they experienced ecstatic dancing outside in a field surrounded by the Hog Farm hippie buses with speakers on top that were blaring out the Grateful Dead’s new album “Workingman’s Dead.” Later that year, Dean and Dudley moved to San Francisco. They were friends of the Jefferson Airplane and had the opportunity to video a big event at Winterland which brought together the Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, and Quicksilver Messenger Service. The concert the night before had been broadcast live on PBS but this night they were allowed to videotape it.
