If you have long nails and won’t cut them, don’t give up guitar! Get creative! Get out of standard E-A-D-G-B-E tuning. Tune your guitar to Open D (D A D F# A D) instead. This lets you play flat-fingered, not on your fingertips where your nails interfere.
Lots of great songs use just 3 chords. In Open D tuning you can use 1 simple shape and only your index finger to get started playing those songs!
You might decide over time that you’d rather cut your nails and remove the limits it puts on your playing. But what are your goals? Casual enjoyment of guitar is possible right away in Open D, even for folks that don’t care about long nails.
