Globally, women account for less than 40 % of ocean science researchers. In Gili Air, most women can’t swim, the ocean being historically reserved for fishermen.
In 2021, an NGO called Coral Catch created the first female coral restoration team in Indonesia, giving local women access to leadership roles in Ocean conservation.
