In allopatric speciation, gene flow is interrupted by geographic isolation and mutations acquired in the separated populations over time resulted in the two populations becoming distinct species with other barriers to reproduction between them. In sympatric speciation, gene flow is reduced in geographically overlapping populations, which develop reproductive barriers that ultimately lead to speciation.
