Iridion 3D is a rail shooter game released in 2001 for the Game Boy Advance. Developed by the German studio Shin'en Multimedia and published by Majesco Entertainment, it gained attention as a technical showcase aiming to push the limits of GBA hardware.
The story begins with the alien force Iridion invading Earth. The player pilots the experimental fighter SHN to defend the planet and later infiltrates Iridion Prime, the enemy’s base, to destroy its core systems. The game consists of seven stages, each featuring unique environments and bosses.
The most notable feature of Iridion 3D is its pseudo-3D graphics achieved on the GBA. Rather than using real 3D, the game uses scaling of 2D sprites and texture loops to simulate depth—an impressive feat for handheld consoles at the time. Players can choose from five weapons, each of which can be upgraded through three levels. Each stage ends with a boss that has specific weak points. The sound, powered by the GAX engine, is considered high quality among GBA games.
However, the game received mixed reviews overall. While graphics and audio were praised, it was criticized for repetitive stages, control issues, and a player ship that often blocked the view. Some media even described Iridion 3D as more of a technical demo than a full game.
Despite its flaws, Iridion 3D laid the groundwork for Iridion II and the Nanostray series, becoming a key title for Shin’en Multimedia’s technical legacy. Though the gameplay was imperfect, its technical ambition as an early GBA title continues to be highly respected.
